How to Broodmother Vs the likes of Alchemist, Legion Commander, and Axe

Introduction

Sup everybody, this is my first guide ever so go easy on me. Please keep an open mind and don't knock it till you try it. Playing Broodmother in the way I will describe in this guide is so incredibly unconventional that by the time the enemy realizes what you are doing, it will be too late. Broodmother is my most played hero by far and in the majority of the games,to the complete and utter dismay of teammates, I first pick Brood. I first pick brood because this skill build ALWAYS catches your opponents off guard. When you first pick brood, you can pretty much bet that there is gonna be an axe, a legion commander, an alchemist, etc. coming to your lane with their skill builds designed to farm your spiderlings. The only thing they will find however is a **** ton of right click harassment, denies, an annoying miss chance, a crippling slow, and multiple deaths immediately following lvl 6 if not before then.

Here is a match id for a game I played earlier today that should be a great example of how & when to start playing aggressively :2246829563. 25 minute gg, 9K,0D,3A. Laned vs a CM & AM.

Disclaimer: This build is intended for use only when brood is facing heroes that can easily farm her spiderlings or can not be killed by her spiderlings (e.g. tidehunter). While you can still use this build vs any lane, the conventional build maxing spiderlings and spin webs first is superior due to how fast spiderlings allow you to farm the jungle and lane simultaneously.

Pros / Cons

[Pros]

- No soul ring start allows for great last last hitting and denying ability
- 1st purchase iron man's shield and lvl 2 incapaciting bite + web regen allows you to trade hits freely
- Catches people totally off guard
- Great kill potential at lvl 4 and insane, tower diving 2 heroes type kill potential at lvl 6
- Not hard countered by a poor man's shield like spiderlings build is / always works
- Destroys the enemy carries early game
- Can trade hits early and can manfight any hero at lvl 6
- Able to be more active in regards to tping to early team fights around the map
- Not as level dependent as spiderlings build so its not TERRIBLE if you have to share the lane with someone. You can even give them last hits and just farm heroes (not ideal).

[Cons]

- Slightly delayed tower pushing ability (lvl 10 Spawn spiderlings)
- Slightly delayed jungle farming ability because no spiderlings
- Teammates instantly flame and say gg if they notice you haven't skilled your Q

Laning Phase

After snagging a bounty rune from the safety of your 1st web, head to either the offlane where you will ideally be solo or head to the midlane. Grab your poor man's shield then your orb of venom asap. Boots are absolutely not a necessity since you have spin web movement speed and the slows from OoV and incapacitating bite. Don't start trading hits with your opponents until lvl 4. Pre-level 4, just focus on last hitting, denying, and if you can do so without missing out on cs, harass the enemy then retreat into invis. If your opponents have sentries in lane, your going against a tri-lane, or are other wise just having a rough time for some reason, just play super safe and get to level 6. There is absolutely no excuse to die in lane as broodmother. Once you hit level 6, immediately begin farming the enemy heroes. If your back is up against your own tower at this point, it is an automatic double or triple kill. If there supports have been pulling however or you are laning with a jackass who pushes the lane constantly, even tower diving 2 heroes shouldnt be a problem so long as you dont get stun locked. Remember to bait out the support's stuns before tower diving with your ult for kills and you should be fine. After lvl 6, you should be using your ult every chance you get to tower dive enemy heroes.

Level 10 and beyond

At this point in the game, you should have at least 5 kills, the enemy's tier 1 tower even without your spiderlings, and at least one of the items listed under the mana regeneration options section so that you can spam spawn spiderlings every time it is off of cooldown. This is where there you begin to play broodmother in the conventional fashion. This means you should have webs allowing you to farm both the enemy's jungle and push their safe lane towers and barracks. Even with just a single point in spawn spiderlings, broodmother can push incredibly fast if you spawn enough spiderites so get to pushing towers immediately. If you have done your laning phase correctly and gotten 5 or so kills, whoever you were laning against will likely just abandon the lane and go elsewhere and the enemy team should be afraid to tp in to defend their tier 2. After the tier 2, just set up webs that can allow you to farm the enemy's jungle while also farming/pushing mid lane and the enemy's safelane barracks.

Items

Power treads, Phase Boots, or Boots of Travel?

Power treads - Treads offer the most by far in terms of kill potential since Brood needs attack speed more than anything else to get more hits in when she uses her ult.

Phase boots - Offers brood a lot more escape ability in addition to being able to phase through your massive army of spiderlings to get in that last hit. Many people don't realize that when brood takes damage while in one of her webs, the movement speed increase from webs is halved for 6 seconds. This typically brings her movement speed down to around 400 but phase boots gets her back up to being nearly hasted.

Boots of Travel - BoT are also a tempting option for brood since she can be just fine with regular old brown boots for a long time.

Mana Regeneration Options

Orchid Malevolence - In an ideal world, you would have space to build this every game. It synergizes perfectly with brood as she needs attack speed, the mana regen, and the active is always nice to have. When you are going for it, aim to get it by 11 minutes. It completely solves broods mana problems.

Vladimir's Offering - Every team should have someone with a Vlad's on it and brood's is a perfect candidate because her spiderlings will be made that much harder to kill with the armor bonus. The damage bonus for the spiderlings isn't gamebreaking but it is much appreciated and will help her push faster. A vladimir's offering alone though will not let you spam your Q as often as possible though so you will need a 2nd item from this list.

Solar Crest - Synergizes beautifully with broodmother since in a 1v1 she applies the miss chance from incapacitating bite plus it will make your spiderlings super deadly. A great pick up vs heroes like bristleback, axe, tidehunter, alchemist, and legion commander especially since you can ruin her duels with it. A solar crest alone though will not let you spam your Q as often as possible though so you will need a 2nd item from this list.

Lotus Orb - In any game with either Slardar or Bounty Hunter, this should be the 1st major item you buy so that you can purge off track and amplify damage. While there are other options for this like diffusal blade and manta style, rushing either of those items will leave you with some serious mana issues. Lotus Orb, on the other hand, will completely solve your mana issues and has an amazing active that will keep you useful if the game goes super late since you can cast it on your hard carry.

Linken's Sphere - A must buy in games with a Spirit Breaker. Every time he tries to charge you to stop your push the linken's will break and that means its a good time to maybe lay low and farm some jungle for a bit. Completely solves your mana problem.

BKB + Situational Items

Black King Bar - After you get your mana problems solved, it is an absolute necessity to get a BKB in 99% of games. Brood can not afford to be bursted down or stunlocked before she can make full use of the damage and lifesteal her ultimate brings to the table. I usually get this item after my mana regen item and before I buy boots even. Don't be conservative with the BKB charges and use them all early in aggressive plays before brood falls off somewhat late game.

Assault Cuirass - Much like Vlads, every team needs an assault cuirass and broodmother is the perfect candidate. Unless someone else is already going for this, I will get this at some point in every game.

Diffusal Blade - Offers brood some much needed agility while also giving her a way to purge off dusts of appearance. When I do build diffusal blade, my next item is almost always a Manta Style as illusions also get the mana break passive.

Butterfly - Only go this route if the enemy team doesn't have heroes that can easily build mkb.

Eye of Skadi
- Always a great item and one of the few brood has when it comes to tanking up vs high magic damage teams.

Mjllonir
- Great counter to high attack speed heroes like wind ranger while also giving brood some much needed attack speed.

Monkey King Bar - Only build this if you absolutely have to counter evasion because brood doesn't have the attack speed to make it worth purchasing otherwise.

Sange and Yasha
- Same function as eye of skadi but with a cheaper build up. Great item to build if your not sure what you need.

Manta Style
- Should really only be built after you have either a radiance, diffusal blade, skadi, butterfly, or linken's because brood's agility gains are terrible and she needs stat items before her illusions would be any good. Also gives her another way to purge debuffs.

Necronomicon - I very rarely build this but it can be necessary in games where there is a techies or numerous invisible heroes.

Radiance - If you can't get it before 20 minutes then don't bother. I'm not a huge of fan of this item because I try to end early but if they have good highground defense and can clear your spiderlings easily, then it allows you to split push with manta style illusions and BoT much like a naga siren does.

Abyssal Blade - Great item to get vs the likes of manta style carries like anti mage and alchemist who can purge off silences.
