Description and Lore

Description: Luna, the Moon Rider is a Ranged Agility carry hero. Even though she can be seen as a tempting target for enemy heroes, Luna possesses solid early game laning presence due to her Lucent Beams, a cheap, low-cooldown nuke, and her Lunar Blessing aura, which grants all nearby allied heroes increased damage. In mid-game, she becomes far more formidable with Moon Glaives, allowing her to decimate entire creep waves with two to three attacks, and Eclipse, which can instantly kill a hero if that hero is unfortunate to catch its full blast. Not a hero to be underestimated, yet painfully fragile at times, Luna must be played as and against with care.
Luna can make use of her easy to use skills in combination with key mechanics such as animation-cancelling, and requires good, some might say conservative, judgement to play due to her lack of escape ability and average health. She is recommended for intermediate players.

Lore:
How had she been reduced to this? She was once the Scourge of the Plains, a merciless leader of men and beasts, and able to sow terror wherever she dared. Now she was far from her homeland, driven half mad from starvation and months of wandering, her army long dead or turned to worse. As she stood at the edge of an ancient forest, a pair of glowing eyes spied on from an elder branch. Something beautiful and deadly sought a meal in the wilting dusk. Without a sound, it turned and left. Fury overtook her. Clutching a rust-eaten dagger, she charged after the beast determined to reclaim even a shred of her past glory, but her quarry would not be caught. Three times she cornered the creature among the rocks and trees, and three times she pounced only to witness its fading shadow darting further into the woods. Yet the full moon shone brightly, and the creatures trail was easy to follow. Arriving in a clearing atop a high hill, the beasts massive feline form sat in the open, attentive and waiting. When the woman brandished her dagger, the creature reared and roared and charged. Death, it seemed, had come for her at long last in this strange place. She stood, calm and ready. A flash of movement, and the beast snatched the dagger from her hand before vanishing into the forest. Stillness. Hooded figures approached. In reverent tones they revealed that Selemene, Goddess of the Moon, had chosen her, had guided her, had tested her. Unwittingly she had endured the sacred rites of the Dark Moon, warriors of the Nightsilver Woods.

She was offered a choice: join the Dark Moon and pledge herself to the service of Selemene, or leave and never return. She did not hesitate. Embracing her absolution, she renounced her bloody past, and took up a new mantle as Luna of the Dark Moon, the dreaded Moon Rider, ruthless and ever-loyal guardian of the Nightsilver Woods.

Introduction

Hello everyone, I'm D3n1eD, and this is my second guide on DotaFire, first one being about Traxex the Drow ranger. Luna was the hero that taught me to play DotA,she was the first hero I started stomping with. It was back in the day when her ultimate had ministun and unlimited beams on any target. Good ol' days. She is my favourite along with Drow. Enough of my ****talk, onto the guide!

Pros/Cons

Pros:
-amazing damage starting at level 1 ( Lunar Blessing)
-spammable nuke with ministun
-ranged cleave ( Moon Glaive
-strong ultimate
-fastest movement speed in game
-full night vision thanks to Lunar Blessing
-can solo mid pretty well
-best looking model (Chaos knight is 2nd in my humble opinion :D)

Cons:
-fragile
-item dependent
-not so easy
-iritating voice (You'll get used to it :D)

Skills

Lucent Beam Cheap, spammable, single target nuke with ministun. Point and click spell, good for harassing lane opponents, stopping channeling spells (TPs!) and getting kills. Crucial to max at level 7 because ultimate's beams do equal damage as your Lucent beams. Max it at 7

Moon Glaive Powerfarming skill. Basically doubles your damage output when maxed, just splitting it on more targets. Makes you a beast late game because it damages everyone near you. Broken when used with Manta Style. Thanks to this skill, you can kill stacked ancients before anyone else.

Lunar Blessing This skill, along with Lucent Beam is what makes you different from most of the carries. You are strong early game. Allows you easy last-hitting early, and gives all nearby allies boost as well.

Eclipse Really powerful one, can turn 2v1 or even 3v1 gank into a double/triple kill for Luna. Hits random targets, and is limited to 4 beams per target (with scepter 6). Better use it when there are no creeps around to maximise damage dealt.

Skill build justification

Lunar Blessing is taken on level 1 to provide you with easier last hitting. Also,in early game it has largest impact, if you max it later, you won't feel the difference in damage you are doing.

Lucent Beam is maxed first because our ultimate does damage based on level of Lucent beam.
Also it is rule of a thumb to max out nukes as soon as possible as they are not as strong later.

Moon Glaive Do not level this early. It is pointless and actually does you harm. People say they harass with it. What you actually do is either skip Lucent beam or Lunar blessing by leveling it,and push your lane which is something you do not want. And you don't have the damage to harass effectively.

Eclipse Level it whenever you can. Simple.

Items

Justification for item build.

Magic Wand Life saver. I get it on every hero, and it never let me down.

Bottle If soloing mid pretty good if rushed. Do not get it as first item. Usefull for rune whoring too.

Power Treads Some people prefer Phase Boots but I say treads are better. Why? Well,Luna is a glass cannon, and needs any HP she can get. While someone might discuss that with phase you can run away more easily, and while that is true, you already are fastest in the game. If you get stunned, you can't use phase, and only raw hp helps you then. Also tread switching is useful for that 1 beam to get the kill,or Agi treads while farming.

Helm of the Dominator All orbs work on Luna now (yaaaaay),but lifesteal is still best on her. Allows you to jungle, stay longer in lane, and most important,to endure in teamfights.

Manta Style Should be bought on almost any agility ranged hero, and Luna is no exception. Also has some sick synergy with your Moon Glaive. Manta Luna hurts a lot. Makes people sad.

Black King Bar A must on Luna. You are low HP hero, and best way to deal with you kind are chainstuns or nukes. Or both. BKB solves this problem, allows you to bounce your glaives on enemy team without interruptions.

Butterfly Gives evasion, damage, agility and attack speed. What's not to like?

Satanic God mode ON.

Ring of Aquila Gives you more power for laning, nice aura, armor and all stats you need. It's good item on Luna but I prefer to skip it in favour of my bigger items.

Aghanim's Scepter For more casting power,it is viable, but I prefer above items. Increases amount of your beams to 12,and their limit per target to 6.

Ethereal Blade If you find someone alone,he is dead. Especially if you have Agaha. 6 beams, multiplied damage plus your lucent beams,it will roast pretty much anyone. E-blade and Agha are good counter to physical monster like phantom assasin Ursa Faceless Void Troll Warlord

Monkey King Bar Counter to evasion and Butterfly carries. Bye bye Mort :)

MjollnirIT STACKS! Atleast when Mjollnir doesnn't proc. So you can have lifesteal and this item. Really powerful combo!

Your role in team.

Luna is a hard carry that focuses on aoe damage in teamfights. Basically farm early game, grab some kills with your spells, and try to finish your core as fast as possible. You can also gank pretty well,as well as push thanks to Moon Glaive. When you get your Helm of the Dominator you can farm stacked ancients with lvl 2/3 moon glaives. You should be higher level than everyone else because of your ability to farm really fast.

Teamfight

Do not go in first. You are glass cannon. Let your initiators do their job. After that, clear any creeps there are,it should be pretty fast because of your moon glaives. After that, cast your ultimate, pop your manta, and focus the highest threat. It will bounce off,and combined with your ultimate you will deal tons of damage. Enemy team probably will focus you because of your damage potential,so position yourself well.

Friends and foes

FRIENDS
Vengeful Spirit This is one sick combo. If you both take you aura at level 1, Luna will have around 80 damage. And venge can support you pretty well, and you can easily snatch a couple of kills with all that damage.

Drow RangerSame as venge, but not recommended on same lane, since both of you are carries. But,if these 3 heroes are in the same team, that is some serious damage. And when you grab an Alpha wolf with your HotD, you will start feeling bad for enemy team. (Yes it does stack with venge's aura in DOTA 2 :D)

Any babysitter and/or disabler is a good lane partner, as long as you get the farm.

ENEMIES
Lina Zeus Bane Brewmaster
Nukers and disablers in general are your bane ( Bane get it? :D)
Brewmaster is nasty becouse of his evasion, slow and miss, and worst, his ult.

Riki can outcarry pretty much everyone, and Luna is no exception.

Phantom Assassin burst damage will make you drop like a fly,and her crit does exactly that.

Ranking Moon Glaive earlier (8 or later) is an option over Lunar Blessing if you are doing well, as you are essentially limited to lane farm without it.

Aghanim's Scepter probably isn't even worth mentioning for Luna. The Eclipse upgrade isn't horrible, nor is the +390 HP, but ultimately it delays your "real" items too much.

Monkey King Bar is a must have against Phantom Assassin, Brewmaster, Butterfly and other Evasion-based heroes/items. With Luna's new orb mechanics, Eye of Skadi is now a viable extension as it stacks with Helm of the Dominator/ Satanic and offers a strong slow and +590 HP (great with Manta Style images). It's hefty 5850g price tag is handled nicely by the farming potential of Moon Glaive as well. Mjollnir is another good luxury, as it essentially stacks with Helm of the Dominator/ Satanic (only Mjollnir procs do not steal life) and boasts excellent synergy with Moon Glaive.

I more or less agree with everything else.

First of all, thank you for your time posting this comment. I consider Aghanim's a fun or really situational build,ex. Ursa will get nuked to oblivion if you have E-blade and Agahanim's.
I completely agree with Monkey King Bar, I actually forgot to put it in,thanks for the input.
Mjollnirwill be added to situational items.

with a Monkey King Bar rikimaru can also suck donkey ****! :)
A good early item to build off your slippers of agility is the Ring of Aquila - nice aura, dmg, mana regen - to keep you laning.
The only thing I do different with Luna is to leave the Boots of Speed - the reason is, 380 move speed is generally enough early game, and with a bit of farm you may find Boots of Travel to be better. Far greater MS, and is easy to get around the map and farm a lane in a few seconds. but I agree treads are core.

Aquilla is a good choice if you are making your Wraith band, but I prefer to skip it and get my Yasha as soon as possible. But will add it to optional section, I tried it and it is good! About naked boots I strongly suggest that you buy Power treds as Luna has low HP so every boost to it helps. Also tread switching is superb,a bit more damage to farm when on agility, adding tank on strenght and giving you enough mana for that one crucial Lucent beam. Boots of travel scale better as the game progresses, giving you global presence and ability to mass push/farm all lane sso it is definetly good choice later on. Thank you for your time reading the guide and posting comment, I really appreciate it.

I've been building an almost identical guide to this, so I guess I'll just throw it out lol. Good guide but I feel like you undervalue her ult stick. Considering how easily you can farm it, its return is very good. You can do 1800 damage to 2 targets at once potentially and it carries tons of beneficial stats. I like to think of her as a hybrid because she can be too easily countered one way or another around mid-late game. If you have ult stick, manta, helm, and treads mid-late game you are a force to be feared. You can lay into people carrying hoods while using your manta and vise-versa with your ult against people stacking armor. Being able to do both damage types HEAVILY is an often over looked aspect of her kit. Most people build so heavily into auto attack builds, that late game you get stifled by enemy mitigation and hp. An ult stick is a good tool to really make your enemy carries decide which damage type to try and deal with mid-late game. Food for thought.

Thing is,her ultimate is strong at all points in the game, but it is getting weaker towards lategame. Aganims costs 4200 gold and gives you 2 bonus beams per target, aswell as aditional total beams. So this means you get bonus 600 damage, after magical resistance 450 for 4200 gold. It is not bad,but I belive it is better to spend gold on something else. I mean for that gold you almost have a Butterfly. Instead of those two additional beams just right click your target and finish him with Lucent beam. As you said, Manta, treads dominator and Aghas mid-late,well I'd swap out Agah's for BKB anytime. These are my arguments on Aganim's,as I consider it an optional or fun build. Some people really like it and consider it core, other can't stand it. I prefer getting dps items as I feel they have stronger presence especially thanks to Moon glaives, but I still buy a scepter from time to time, usually paired with Ethereal blade. Thank you for sharing you thoughts and taking time to comment, I really appreciate it.

My only problem with this is how weak your hp is early game, even with a PMS i bought, i was way too squishy.

There is not much you can do about it,she is like SF,fragile but powerful. Try buying a couple of Bracers or Wraith bands if you are having problems surviving. Considering her farm potential it shouldn't be long until you farm your BKB, as it gives you a huge boost to your survivability. Aquilla also helps as it increases your armor and that increases your EHP (effecitve health points).
Try to position yourself well and be careful until you get your Manta and BKB, then it's your time to shine. Also, I could say that Luna's best defense is her incredible offense, comparable to SF. Kill them before they kill you, it is not hard thanks to your ultimate and your low cooldown nuke.
Hope that helps!
