Introduction Pros & Cons

Silencer is an intelligence hero.Unlike most of them silencer has very good carry potential based on his right click power.

Pros:
Orb Walk
Excellent single target nukes
Useful at all stages of the game
Flexible on his roles

Cons:
Squishy
Mana dependent
Can be countered by silence/BKB

Possible Roles #1,#2,#4

Best allies

Silencer loves nukers and gankers of all kinds.
They set up the fight for you or they nuke down the enemy enough for you to finish them off.
Shadow Demon, Tinker, Vengeful Spirit,Thrall, Venomancer
Special mention to Keeper of the Light if you lane with this hero you will have mana forever due to his chakra magic and later on he saves you from TPing to your team.

Worst enemies

Heroes who burn your mana or silence you.
Drow Ranger, Death Prophet,Anti mage, Clinkz, Orchid Malevolence, Diffusal Blade, Necronomicon
Special mention #1 to Nyx Assassin this bug is so annoying for you ... his manaburn grows as you grow as you steal intelligence from enemy heroes.
Basicly he can burst you down (if you dont take precautions) till start of late game.
Special mention #2 to Outworld Devourer[ this bird is pretty hard to lane against since he sucks your manapool and minimizes your damage.Later on he can remove you so you wont use ulti in teamfight. But with a correct used ultimate you can handle OD (unless he has bkb).

Early Game

Middle lane:
Grab your Glaives of Wisdom in level 1 and be ready to exchange some hits with enemy while your creeps focus him and his creeps ignore you.Focus on maxing your last word and after having 2 levels on it consider spamming it.Do some typical rune checking if your enemy has a bottle and last hit as much as possible.
At this point you have a choice of getting curse of the silent or maxing your Glaives of Wisdom.
Personally when there is a challenge mid I max glaives, but remember if you dont get early curse of the silent it will be useless in late game so it wont be so usefull versus your enemy midder but it can work miracles on your ganks so think twice before you skill glaives

Note:If you pick Glaives you will probably farm more and gank less with Curse you will gank better and farm less. The choice is yours

Sidelane:
Sidelane isnt so bad as a choice for silencer given the right support and farm.
If you have one ally pulling for you, you can probably keep up on levels with mid hero with better farm. The problem is you arent on position to gank as good as mid does and you can be shut down to 2 enemy heroes, but you can also get early kills or assists (which means EXTRA INTELLIGENCE).

Sidelane support:
Although I dont like this idea, Silencer can grab a headress for his ally, pull the creeps for him and spam curse of the silent on the enemies. He isnt ideal as a support but he isnt bad as well he can haras free of agro due to Glaives of Wisdom which is pretty valuable when you are trading hits with creeps between you and your enemy.

Mid game

If you are the mid silencer or the sidelane farmer now is the time to shine and to steal even more intelligence from the enemies.I suggested dagon which is pretty unorthodox but works good for 1 simple reason:You have decent DOT* but you dont do any burst at all,so you it's less likely someone dies from you and you are alive to get the intelligence. So dagon solves your problem, but dont upgrade it unless you are raping hard.
Force Staff on the other hand is more orthodox (if you have the damage to kill the enemies) ,not as great as it used to be (offering as),but still valuable and gives you extra mobility to chase or to get the hell out of trouble.

*DOT=Damage over time

If you are the support silencer you should have your Mekansm and definately try make Force Staff for saving your allied heroes. Not much to say here, buy observer wards/Sentry Wards, place them, get Smoke of Deceit for the team and follow them all the time because you are way too squishy to venture all alone.

During this stage of the game you should hunt down and kill LOWEST HP enemy heroes (find a hero, make him your *****, steal intelligence, profit). These pickups will allow your orb walk rightclicks to do ****loads of damage later on.

Late game

Mid/Sidelane silencer
At this point you should be raping the enemies even enemy harder carries should be killable by you.Normally you should try isolating heroes with your team by smoke ganks or in mass teamfights you will probably kill 1-2 heroes during global silence and chase the others.
The key items on silencer late game are Black King Bar and Scythe of Vyse.
If you have both you will 90% own the enemies unless your allies fed them.
Also the key on playing good silencer is a good timing on Global Silence.
Ultimate should be used 1-2 seconds after your team's initation so your initiator wont be burst down and your team will follow him to destroy the enemies.
Also dont be far from your team. You should be close enough but not too close to be focused and die.
Positioning is the hardest thing on this hero.
At this point of the game its wise to know you should kick *** but dont overextend and after fights push the enemy towers to get their barracks.
Because in an ultra late game scenario if you havent stolen like 70+ intelligence most agility hard carries kill silencer or can hurt him pretty bad during bkb duration.

Support Silencer
Stick with your team, time your ulti and dont forget to buy wards and smoke of deceit.

Explaining the item choices

Silencer is a glass canon. He can deal much damage in all stages of the game, but he never stops being a paper unless you play with BKB heart Shivas which is pretty unorthodox.Your hp is little but it's enough with a well timed ulti. You should kill
2-3 enemies in teamfights and then tp out if you are running low on mana or your allies are falling back.

Early game items:
Null Talisman:Cheap damage, can be turned to dagon later on.

Bracer:Cheap Hp can be turned into Drums later on.Prefer it on support silencer not on carry.

Magic Wand:A situational item on laning, but necessary on teamfights.

Urn of Shadows:A support item choice generally, works good with your DOT.

Force Staff:A positioning item, good for escape or chase. Its consider core on silencer

Blink Dagger:Positioning item as well.A personal favourite.
Blink works great with Silencer ultimate.Stay far and safe from the enemies use Global Silence and then blink in and right click them to death.Works great in early game with dagon too.

Dagon:Although dagon is one of the worst items in dota,in silencer it can work prety well if you gank. You can burst down enemies with dagon which will give you much intelligence in the early game and make you hit even harder later on.The earlier you have a dagon the better it will work.
Also DONT UPGRADE DAGON.

Mid Game Items:
Black King Bar:Not much to say here, you are a paper and you need immunity versus casters and stuns.

Mekansm:Support item choice. The earlier you have it the better it will work.

Euls Scepter:Usefull for chasing or for avoiding damage and debuffing enemy silences.

Rod of Atos:Good damage and hp soucre.Cost effective item.

Orchid Malevolence:With orchid you will make yourself even deadlier to enemies mostly due to attack speed you get.But orchid gives you no surviability at all.

Pipe:Usefull against Aoe Spells. Can be picked by support silencer

Ghost Scepter:Usefull against physical damage of all sources

Drum of Endurance:Some extra stats and movement speed. Can be picked by support silencer

Necronomicon:Good underrated item.Movement speed aura as well as pushing potential, true sight is welcome as well for dewarding and revealing invisible heroes.

Late game items

Scythe of Vyse:Your best damage source also makes your enemy sheep. Its a must to pick this up if you have the money.

Shiva's Guard:Your 2nd best damage item,it also reduces enemy As and gives you the ability to slow if you are close enough.

Heart of Tarrasque:If you need to get tanky this is the item for you

Assault Cuirass:Situational pickup of armor

Linkens Sphere:Are you dealing with an enemy that has superior to BKB spells like beastmaster or Atropos ?Then consider picking it.

About the boots choice:
Orthodox boots are Treads, but I d rather get tranquil boots for cheap movement speed and later on upgrade to BoT.

6.81 changelog

- Global Silence now affects sleeping units
- Added Aghanim's Scepter for Silencer
Applies the current level of Curse of the Silent to all units and increases ultimate duration by one second.

With this changelog silencer can be even more flexbile to his role. Basicly you can aim for a mid game Aghanim's Scepter (because an early game would be pointless due to lack of damage) and you can finish off your enemies during silence even easier (due to damage dealt by ultimate).
Of course the carry potential remains ,but you can also be a game breaking son of a ***** every enemy hates which is even more valuable to your team.
6.81: Silencer now gets 3 agility per level which is a quite significant buff and indicates that he should adapt a more carry oriented approach .Still his weakness is that he gets destroyed by BKB right clickers so to be honest I still dont think easy lane isnt for this hero since he is a hell lot of level dependent so I suggest he is sent mid. Although he can be pretty decent in mid lane his last hit animation isnt great.

Conclusion

There are no pro replays of silencer mostly because he is autoban due to version changes nowadays.Good to luck to your pubs and leave me some feedback.
Update:In few pro games silencer is picked he is mostly aiming for an early support core with a fast meka.Replays coming soon.
Edit:About replays Silencer is still rarely drafted but there are some examples like Vanskor and EGM picking Silencer sometimes in professional dota games.Seek their replays they certainly have more to teach you than I do
