Get to know Chen the Holy Knight

Hello! Welcome to my guide: Chen: Priest of Persuasion! According to DotaBuff, Chen is the most unused hero in the game. This is very, very sad. Chen is probably one of the best, if not the best support and pusher in the game.

Chen is a usually played as a jungler, because he can make quick work of camps with his Holy Persuasion. Then with his creeps he can push towers very effectively, even within the first 5-10 minutes. He can nuke enemies with Test of Faith, as well as save allies with it. He can slow and amplify damage taken with Penitence, which works very well with his horde of creeps. His ultimate, Hand of God, is one of the best in the game, healing all of his creeps completely and healing his entire team.

Overall his skills work in perfect synchrony with one another, and gives him the power to turn the game in his team's favor.

Pros / Cons

Pros:
-Great healing
-Great jungler
-Can save people with Test of Faith
-Medium Nuke (Test of Faith)
-Great in team fights
-Can take down heroes fast
-With right creeps good stuns / slows

Cons:
-Hard to micro
-Requires good cooperation
-Supports get bossed around by team more
-Requires good timing
-Easily Countered
-Countered by experienced players (Warded Camps)
-Falls Off Late Game, Must push HARD

Runes

Red - Nope
Orange - Maybe
Green - Go Ahead

Double Damage For a good attack
Illusion Just, no
Invisibility For a gank
Regeneration If you need it
Haste To rush to help / attack somebody
Bounty For some extra gold and exp.

Remember you can deny runes if you think an enemy will get it before you!

Items

Starting Items:

Courier - Very important throughout the game, make sure to get this. You only need one.

Wards - Not essential like the courier, but a very helpful item. Make sure to get these if you don't already have them.

Sentry Wards - Make sure to get these in games with more experienced players. Most likely they will place wards in the jungle to keep camps from spawning.

Sage's Mask - Good Mana regeneration for using Holy Persuasion.

Iron branch - Good for basic stats and builds into Headdress >> Mekanism.

Smoke of Deceit - Extremely useful item for early gank or first blood. Hides you and your creeps.

Early Game:

Boots of Speed - Adds some extra movement speed and builds into Arcane Boots.

Ring of Basilius - Gives you and your creeps extra mana regen and armor.

Headdress: Extra Health regeneration for you and your creeps. Builds into Mekansm.

Core:

Guardian Greaves - Amazing on Chen, now combining his cores into one solid item. He can heal and give mana to allies and his creeps. 'Nuff said. The purge is great for team fights as well.

Aghanim's Scepter - Upgrades your ultimate. Being able to heal your team every 30 seconds is AMAZING.
This is now an absolute core, being able to wander around with an ancient magic immune Dragon at your side is too op.

Vladmir's Offering - Gives lifesteal to your creeps and other allies. Now is WAY better with ranged lifesteal. That means you and all your creeps can now lifesteal (including the Ancients). The mana, heal, and damage aura are an added bonus.

Luxury:

Assault Cuirass - Attack Speed for allies and Armor Reduction on enemies.

Pipe of Insight - Gives health regeneration in an AoE and gives a shield that absorbs magic damage to nearby allies.

Scythe of Vyse - Disables the enemy so you can go in for the kill or slow them down. Also works to disable attackers like Riki.

Other Cool Stuff:
Boots of Travel - Get to the jungle to get some creeps.

Medallion of Courage - Since your creeps will b doing most of the damage use this on enemies or Roshan to take them down quicker.

Necronomicon - More Creeps!

Shiva's Guard - An extra slow and damage dealer.

Town Portal Scroll - Get some creeps.

Support Items:

Wards - See top of list

Flying Courier - Makes the courier more efficient.

Dust of Appearance - Helps with invisible heroes.

Skills

Penitence:

Forces an enemy unit to move slower and take more damage from attacks and spells.
Range: 600
Duration: 7
Slow: 8%/16%/24%/32%
Bonus Damage: 8%/16%/24%/32%
Cooldown 14/13/12/11 Mana 100

Use this when you are beating them to death with your creeps. Helps amazingly.

Test of Faith (Nuke):
Test of Faith
Deals random damage to test an enemy unit's faith.
Range: 600
Damage Min: 50/100/150/200
Damage Max: 100/200/300/400
Cooldown 24 Mana 175

Use this to finish them off or soften them for an easy kill. But remember it's not very reliable.

Test of Faith (Teleport):
Test of Faith
Teleports a friendly unit back to the base. Creeps are teleported instantly, Heroes have a delay before teleporting.
Hero Teleport Delay: 6/5/4/3
Cooldown 24 Mana 200

Use this to save yourself or allies. Remember there is a delay. If things look like s**t's hitting the fan, save the most important person, usually the carry. Hand of God also helps. Not worth it on creeps.

Holy Persuasion:

Gives control of an enemy or neutral creep, and gives it bonus hit points.
Range: 900
Max Units: 1/1/2/3
Health Bonus: 75/150/225/300
Cooldown 30/26/22/18 Mana 100

Self Explanatory, I'll go over this in the Jungling and Creeps section. Definitely get Agh's as soon as possible after Arcane Boots and Mekanism because now you can use Holy Persuasion on ANCIENTS. Yes, mofo-ing ANCIENTS. Do you realize how having a ,giant ,tanky, DRAGON that slows enemies down is way OP?

Hand of God:

Fully regenerates any creeps under Chen's control and heals all allied heroes on the map.
Heal: 200/300/400
Cooldown 160/140/120 (30*) Mana 200/300/400
Can be Improved by Aghanim's Scepter (* With Aghanim's Scepter). Reduces cool down.

Great for saving your team in a team fight. They will love you for this. Use it when everyone is about half health or below so they can keep fighting. Using Mek with it helps too.

Jungling and Creeps

For basic jungling info I recommend Xanasis's Guide on Jungling (and yes it is a little outdated, but the basics are still the same).

Ok, so now you know the details of jungling. This part of the guide is more focused on which creeps to use and how to use them. Chen is a jungling oriented hero and will be in the jungle most of the early and mid game.

Early Jungling:

Chen will go into the jungle as fast as possible. From there wait outside one of the hard camps, making sure not to be in it, otherwise the creeps with not spawn and you will not a get a good early creep.

Creeps to go for are:
1. Dark Troll Summoner (Big Green Staff Troll)
2. Centaur Khan (Big Centaur)
3. Hellbear Smasher (Big Red Bear)
4. Alpha Wolf (Wolf with Stripes)

I usually prefer to get the Dark Troll Summoner or Hellbear Smasher early on because they scan tear through camps pretty easily, Dark Troll with his Raise Dead Summons and Hellbear
Smasher with his sheer damage and tankability.

When you get one of these powerful creeps, hit the harder camps first, and get the easy and medium camps while the harder ones are respawning. try and time it so that you can constantly jungle. And time not jungling is wasted gold and experience.

Mid game:

By now you should have Holy Persuasion at least level three if not four. Ideally, my perfect horde of creeps is:

1. Centaur Khan
2. Alpha Wolf
3. Dark Troll Summoner

The reason I prefer these three creeps are because Centaur has his stun and attack speed aura, Alpha Wolf raises your damage and critical chance, and Dark Troll is ranged and can raise 2 extra units, as well as keep a unit in one place with Ensnare.

Now is your time to shine. Focus on roaming and getting kills or helping other heroes get kills. If someone needs a heal use your Mekanism. NEVER USE HAND OF GOD ON ONE PERSON (except yourself). It is way too valuable.

Late Game:

You should be more focused on helping your team push and get kills at this point. But just in case you need some extra gold or experience you should be jungling the ancient camps. However you should not be taking away from the carry if they need to jungle in the late game.

Using your Creeps

Getting Kills:
Using your perfect horde (Dark Troll, Centaur Khan, and Alpha Wolf) it should be easy getting kills.
1. Use Smoke of Deceit to sneak up on enemies.
2. Stun with Centaur Khan
3. Use Chen's Penitence to slow and amplify the damage they take.
4. Use your creeps to damage them.
5. If they try to get away use Dark Troll's Ensnare.
6. Nuke them with Test of Faith
7. Repeat Steps 2-6 until dead.

Pushing:
For pushing, it is mostly just getting all you creeps and attacking the hell out of it. But there are a few tips I can give you:
1. Absorb the hits with your creeps. You can always get more.
2. If you are being hit by the tower, attack a friendly unit to make it switch targets.
3. When it seems the allied creep wave is getting killed, now is the time to back off. Not when YOU are getting hit by the tower.

Solo Roshan:
With Sufficent Creeps, usually 2 Centaur Khans / Hellbear Smashers and 1 Alpha Wolf Chen can successfully take on Rosh 1v4 (Haha)

Other Basic Tips:- Remember to deny your creeps
- Centaur / Hellbear are the most important to keep alive.
- Heal your creeps when they get at about half health or lower (using Mek) try to keep them at a full HP.

Chen: Friends and Foes

Friends of Chen include those with stuns and slows which are helpful for when he ganks. Also heroes that have auras are also helpful to you and your creeps. Some friends of Chen include:
Centaur Warrunner
Vengeful Spirit
and Lich

Some of his mortal enemies are ones that can counter-push and destroy / control creeps. And Ancient Apparition.
Nature's Prophet
Earthshaker
Clinkz
Enchantress
Helm of the Dominator
And above all:
Ancient Apparition, who can stop you from healing and regenerating health.

When to use Hand of God

Use H.O.G when:
-You are in a team fight and your team is losing.
-You are close to death, and have already used up other heals / are being chased.
-To keep up a final push (in enemy base)

Do not use H.O.G when:
-You are at half or above health
-To heal your creeps
-You have other heals
-You have time to use Test of Faith

Summary

Chen is a ranged support and pushing hero. He is mainly focused on jungling and getting exp. early game and then can start to roam and help in teamfights mid to late game. He can slow and amplify damage with Penitence, Nuke and teleport with Test of Faith, Control creeps with Holy Persuasion, and Heal the entire team with Hand of God. Ideally his creep horde should be Centaur Khan / Hellbear Smasher, an Alpha Wolf, and a Dark Troll Summoner. He scales very well into late game and can fit many purposes. He relies on his creep hide to push and get kills. But overall he is one of the best supports in the game and can lean the game in his favor.

Conclusion

Thanks for reading my guide! I really hope I make you a better Chen player! He is very fun to play when you know how! I had a lot of fun writing this guide and am working on many more soon! If there are any problems or typos you see please tell me! Suggestions and opinions are also valued! Please favorite and vote! Until next guide!
