Overview.

Beastmaster is strength hero that is consistently picked for having the ability to survive and farm while in the suicide lane. He is most preferred on the dire side for reasons explained later. This guide is made specifically for playing in a competitive team composition. This guide was also made due to his unpopularity in Dota 2.

Pro's

  • Tanky.
  • Good Teamfight Contribution.
  • Push Potential.
  • Safe farm potential in the off - lane.
  • Great gank and roam potential.
  • Hard To Gank.

Con's

  • Give your opponents some decent free farm on their lane.
  • Requires some micro.
The Pro's most definitely outweigh the con's and thus is why he is a common offlaner / 2nd stage ban in competitive matches. Looking at the other dotafires guides, it's safe to say in my opinion, they are mere pub builds that have no versatility against competant players and do not shine in strong team compositions.

Cutting Down The Off-Lane Tree's Before The Game Starts

Why Cut Down The Off Lane Trees?

Quite simply, it gives you a lot more vision than you would have otherwise due to the trees blocking the way. It's common in trilane's for the supports (or anyone for that matter) in order to get behind the off-laner and score a kill. If you cut down the tree's, it becomes pretty hard for you to be ganked and thus you are hard to shut down.

Refer to this picture to see which patch of tree's you will be cutting off. With each patch labelled to identify which patch of tree's you need to cut depending on whether you are on the radiant or dire team.

Leaving some tree's is a common mistake upon first tries and a little experience is needed to achieve a consistent tree cut. Use this video as a reference on how to cut the tree's on both sides.

Explanation Of Skill Build.

Wild Axes

This skill is leveled at level one and maxed at eight for various reasons.
It's your nuke. Does decent early and mid game damage(Total 360 at level four if both hit).
It's your farming skill. Used to stack and farm the ancients.
Allows you to push, last hit and counter push effectively.
Cut's down trees which allows you to be see ganks coming. It also allows you to initiate or escape much easier.
Call Of The Wild
This skill is maxed in conjunction as it's known as a portable 90 second ward. Both the Hawk and Boar are very useful and require little micro.
The hawk's vision helps to setup a portable ward that in turn prevents you from being ganked, allows for better vision to setup for ganks, can spot out runes and roshan attempts.
The boar helps in slowing enemies (by 35%) to avoid them from fleeing and also to prevent enemies from catching up to you during a gank on you.
Inner Beast
A very powerful aura that provides all allies within 900 range 40 passive attack speed. The reason this is low leveled early game is due to this aura actually affecting creeps. This results in the lane being pushed and that results in the opposing safe lane having farm and leaves you with less farm and experience. This skill is still very powerful mid - late game as pushing becomes a major role. Stats should never take priority over this skill.
Primal Roar
The longest reliable single target stun in the game and it goes through BKB. A very strong ultimate with a relatively low cooldown. Don't be afraid to use to save yourself or to guarantee an iffy kill. The fact that the debuffs (not the stun) are given in an aoe are a great added bonus. Because of the aoe debuffs, don't think of it as a must in a teamfight. There is nothing worse than wasting your ultimate on someone that is standing in the back of their team and having the stun wasted because the team wasn't there to take advantage of the full stun duration.

Explanation Of Item Build --- Utility / Semi-Carry

Starting Items:

Two Clarity along with Healing Salve and Tango give you great early game health and mana regeneration that allows you to cop some harass while still harassing and farming with your Wild Axes as well.

Three Iron Branch give you great stats and should not be ignored early game. They are called GG branches for a reason.

During The Laning Phase:

You will want to grab Boots of Speed as soon as you can moving into a Magic Wand and a Soul Ring. The soul ring will help you farm with little worry about health or mana regeneration. Grabbing a Town Portal Scroll in order to pull off a gank with Primal Roar at level 6 is generally a good idea.

Mid Game Core's:

You should be considering either Phase Boots or Power Treads. Generally, Phase Boots help you to get a better ultimate off while Power Treads give more dps and tank ability.
Keeping a Town Portal Scroll on you should be essential at this point.

Mid Game Options:

Drum of Endurance is a great tank and aura item that stacks with your aura giving your team loads of attack speed when in range.
Force Staff is a common utility item which helps you to get a good ulti off, chase better, escape better along with help position your team better.
Medallion of Courage will help in your ganking significantly but will slightly taper off during teamfights.
Blink Dagger. Great all round mobility item, don't ignore it.
Aghanim's Scepter is a very strong item that gives you great stats, a long range ulti and most importantly a 45 second cooldown on your ultimate. Never be afraid to use your ultimate if you have this.

Late Game Options:

Boots of Travel give great movespeed and the active teleport ability is crucial in games where a small split push could be your team loses their barracks.

Scythe of Vyse is an intelligence item that still should be mentioned as it's a gamebreaking item that renders one person on the opposing team useless for 3.5 seconds. Crucial against blinkers and targets with god escape mechanisms.

Orchid Malevolence also an intelligence cripple item favouring more DPS on Beastmaster.

Heart of Tarrasque is a great tank item when your health needs a significant boost. Keeps you in the teamfight for longer and thus continues to give your allies his aura.

Assault Cuirass another great tank item that mixes DPS and tankiness. The aura gives your team more attack speed in which heavy right clicking will rely on.

Explanation Of Item Build --- Semi-Support

Starting Items:

Animal Courier is an essential item for your team and should never be ignored. If your team has one already purchased, make sure you buy Observer Ward. You won't have time to place these wards as you need to cut down your off-lane trees and head back to base to regenerate your mana. In the case that you bought Observer Ward, ask someone on your team, preferably a support to plant the wards.

Boots of Speed should be your first pick up in the lane and you should move on to Headdress for great aura health regeneration. Picking up a Flying Courier by the 7 minute mark (if you're team has not already done so) will help out your team alot. You will want to be saving up for Arcane Boots, but it will generally be delayed when you hit level 6. Once you hit level 6, you should be ganking with Primal Roar and the purchase of a Town Portal Scroll and even Smoke of Deceit will help you pull off your ganks effectively.

Mid Game Core's:

Once Arcane Boots are completed, you can help your team push towers with ease and you should be working on your way to a Mekansm which will once again help your team push and teamfight. Keeping a Town Portal Scroll on you at all times in mid-game is very useful.

Mid Game Options:

As stated in the title, the suggested items are all options and should be chosen with recognition to your team's and the enemy team's composition. Pipe of Insight should definitely be considered if the enemy team has alot of magical damage or magical teamfight ultimate's. Examples of this would include Lich, Tidehunter, Lina and Lion to name a few. Most team compositions will cause you to generally build a pipe unless of course, another support is already doing so.

Blade Mail should be considered if you feel you are being targeted during teamfights and/or die too easily.

Gem of True Sight is generally a worth-while item against invisible heroes but more importantly against wards. Giving your team map control by killing the enemies team's wards is a very strong advantage.

Vladmir's Offering is a great aura item generally bought by supports to let the team's melee carry buy further carry items.

Blink Dagger is overall a good item on Beastmaster which can help with team initiation and escape quickly.

Drum of Endurance should be sought after as any organised team should have one person build towards one. Make sure to pop off the active skill during teamfights.

Medallion of Courage is definitely a strong item as it helps take down one target very easily. This can also be used for an early roshan along with the passive mana regeneration helps Beastmaster out alot.

Ghost Scepter though, not commonly picked up by Beastmaster can be considered against high right clicker's such as Ursa and Drow Ranger. Be aware of the extra magic damage you take when activating.

Aghanim's Scepter is a very strong item that gives you great stats, a long range ulti and most importantly a 45 second cooldown on your ultimate. Never be afraid to use your ultimate if you have this.
