1. Introduction

Welcome to my guide for one of the coolest undeads in Dota: Undying. He's a very good hard support/tank if his user can play effectively. Sadly he's not frequently picked in the metagame right now because he's not suitable for fast push, rats and ganking. However he can do very well in a team fight regardless and has a good harass spell in laning stage.
Pros:
- As a hard support, he can do well without items
- Good in all lanes, especially offlane
- A spammable harass spell Decay
- Good starting stats and damage
- One of the highest int gain for str heroes
- Tombstone can clear trees, so ur opponent cant juke
- Fantastic team fight capability

Cons:
- If played as a tank, he needs items to cover his ******ed str gain, especially when you're counter-picked
- Stats gain is very terrible
- His Tombstone can be destroyed easily late game
- Can be quite mana dependent if faced against heroes with mana drain abilities
- No stuns and no escape mechanism

2. Laning stage/Early game

Normally undying would be going offlane, he can do solo and no problem doing dual as well. Make sure you get 1 ward to ward enemy's jungle so that you wont get ganked. Going mid is viable but not recommended option for him, safe lane is fine but make sure you dont get in your carry's way in term of farming. Getting Decay first would make you able to harass the opponent's carry. Once you hit level 2, if you get 2 Decay on them and they are pushing the lane, you can drop Tombstone down and they can hardly get away. You will want to max your Tombstone first so it can tank more hits, then Soul Rip for maximum healing, then Decay, since leveling Decay only gives you a bit more damage.
If your opponents can spam spells like Lion, Skywrath Mage, etc... then buy a Magic Stick as soon as possible, those burst heal for hp and mana will come in handy later (dont waste it though). If you find it hard to last hit, consider getting a Soul Ring instead of trying to finish your arcane's boot as it is cheaper and safer to get.

3. Mid game

Now you should be able to get your arcane's boot / Soul Ring already and the game just passed 10 minutes. Maxing out Tombstone asap as it will be come tankier and can survive team fight better. After finishing your boot you should be getting a Mekansm to help your teammates as well as make you tankier. NOTE: If there is a Earthshaker in the opponent's team, rush a Pipe of Insight asap and skip Mekansm, since his Echo Slam can be devastating to your team when Tombstone is down. Always bring a long a Town Portal Scroll to help your teammates when they are in need or simply escape from a lost fight.
In a teamfight, you should initiate/counter initiate with your Tombstone, then immediately use Flesh Golem so that you and your teammates deal more damage, then Decay and Soul Rip any low hp teammates. Make sure you position your Tombstone so that it wont be targeted easily by the opponents and still in range (normally on high ground or behind trees, but if there's no better terrain just put in down regardless)

4. Late game

Now you should concentrate on making yourself tanky so that you can survive longer in a team fight to maximise the time you're in Flesh Golem. This is because your other 3 skills do not scale very well late game, especially Tombstone when your opponent's carry can destroy it in 2, 3 hits. Only your ulti, Flesh Golem is good as the 30% amplify damages increases as your team's carries have more items and damages. This also works on illusions to increase their damages output. For example, with Flesh Golem in effect and theoretically speaking that you're very near your opponent so that the amplify damage effect is maximised, now Manta Style's illusions can deal 44% damages for melee and 37% for ranged heroes, increases their total damage to 88% and 72% for both illusions, compared to 66% and 56% initially, this can matter whether the fight is won or not.
A Shiva's Guard is a great pick up as it increases your armor so that you're tankier, it also helps you all the mana problem with 27 Int, and its active comes in handy with your Tombstone too. Heart of Tarrasque and Bloodstone is self-explanatory. Rod of Atos works the same as Shiva's Guard with a bit more hp and a good slow. Finally upgrade your boot to a Boots of Travel after using the mana booster for bloodstone

5. Situational Items

Undying is a very versatile hero that's why his situational items are more than usual. Blade Mail is a good pick up to deal more damage ( Flesh Golem can amplify damage from Blade Mail too) as you tank damages (but only when you already have a few more items that give you strength, or else you can't tank much).
You can also pick up a Vladmir's Offering to help your carries and your zombies deal a bit more damage. Same with Assault Cuirass if your team mates haven't picked it up yet. Urn of Shadows is a cheaper healing tool and it gives you some str early game.
Crimson Guard is a new item and is extremely helpful if your opponent's line up have a lot of right click heroes or illusion-based heroes like Phantom Lancer. It can be built from Vanguard which is also a good tank item early game.
Ghost Scepter and Heaven's Halberd are more useful if your opponent has one or two right clickers only and can be picked up from mid game onward.
Medallion of Courage is good if your team wanna take roshan frequently.
Linken's Sphere is a good defensive item however a bit luxurious, but it is good if your carry needs a bit more protection.
Consider picking up a Veil of Discord if your team has strong wizards like Invoker or Zeus.
When you need an escape mechanism, Blink Dagger and Force Staff are always handy and can help you position yourself better too.

6. Friends and Foes

Friends
Crystal Maiden is a good team mate as her aura helps you a lot in all stages of the game
Pugna: you and pugna can be a pusher combo as your Tombstone can delay the creep wave as he spams his Nether Blast on the tower. Moreover, he can Decrepify your Tombstone so that it wont be targeted in team fight
Tinker: he can tp to your zombie and do all the nasty **** to clean up the mess
Phoenix: his fire spirit can decrease your opponent's attack speed so much that he cant even take 1 hit on your tombstone
Keeper of the Light who doesnt want free mana?
Slardar: his ulti can help your zombies wear down your opponent's supports or even kill them
Illusions-based heroes like Phantom Lancer, Chaos Knight, Naga Siren or Terrorblade as your Flesh Golem will greatly increase the illusions' damage output
Naga Siren can use her ulti so that you have more time to place your Tombstone, plus the zombies will spawn even when Song of the Siren is active for the initial slow afterwards

Foes
Earthshaker: this will be your forever arch-enemy as his Echo Slam will backfire your Tombstone immediately. Rush a Pipe of Insight if your opponent is an *** and counter you with this
Nyx Assassin, Lion or quas-wex Invoker with EMP can wear down your mana pool and make you quite useless in fight. Silencer can do the same thing to you PLUS a Global Silence.
Faceless Void can just Chronosphere on your team and kill you first in a teamfight
Axe imagine he runs/blinks to your team with a bunch of zombies then Berserker's Call?
Doom well, you're doomed

Strong against
Lich without Aghanim's Scepter, his Chain Frost will be wasted on zombies in team fight
Broodmother: his spiders will spawn more zombies for you as well as increase Soul Rip's heal/damage
Nature's Prophet: He's bad against Undying because of his treants which will spawn more zombies. Plus Tombstone can destroy his Sprout and make him unable to escape/trap anybody. Other than that Nature's Prophet functions like any ranged carry and can destroy Tombstone pretty fast with enough items so be careful
