Regular team v team matches. As far as i can tell it's just a way of guaranteeing a quality of match. You can also pre-plan and organise trying specific strategies, as they will be hosted in lobbies it wont affect your team's MMR.

Or is that wide of the mark?

Scrim = Scrimmage

Scrimmage (alteration of skirmish) may refer to:

- an informal sports contest or practice match which does not go on the regular season record

basically a scrim is an organised match like a tournament but its more informal.

if you were to associate it with war:

Skirmish - an episode of irregular or unpremeditated fighting, especially between small or outlying parts of armies or fleets.

Scrim - two team organize a game of dota that isnt for anything. sometimes between 10 friends sometimes between 2 actual teams.

Battle - a sustained fight between large organized armed forces.

Tournament - organised games between many team for a prize

basically

a lobby match.
